Om Birla has been re-elected as Lok Sabha Speaker.
Om Birla on behalf of the National Democratic Alliance and Kodikunnil Suresh on behalf of the India Alliance contested for the post of 18th Lok Sabha Speaker.
Prime Minister Modi proposed a resolution appointing Om Birla as Speaker of the Lok Sabha as the voice vote began in Parliament. Then Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and United Janata Dal President Rajiv Ranjan Singh moved the resolution.
Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Shivraj Singh Chouhan
and Hindustani Awami Morcha leader Jitan Ram Manji supported the resolution.
Suresh Shiv Sena Uddhav Thackeray MP from Kodikunnil on behalf of India Alliance. Arvind Sawant, Samajwadi MP Anand Padavria, Nationalist Congress MP. Proposed by Supriya Sule. DMK Parliamentary Committee Leader Kanimozhi moved the resolution.
On the basis of majority, Om Birla has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. As per their tradition, Prime Minister Modi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi invited him to the seat of Lok Sabha Speaker. This is the first time in the last 25 years that a person has been sworn in as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for two consecutive terms.
