Central Minister Suresh Gopi and ISRO Chairman discussed flood risk assessment for Kerala dams.
Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Tourism Suresh Gopi met ISRO Chairman Somanath at Antariksh Bhawan in Bengaluru yesterday.
According to a press release issued by ISRO, the dignitaries discussed the use of space technology to study the flood risk of Mullaperiyar and Idukki dams in Kerala.
Minister Suresh Gopi expressed his concern to ISRO scientists about the need to assess the worst flood situation in these two dams in Kerala.
ISRO chief S. Somanath assured the minister of providing high-resolution topographical data-related space-based inputs to researchers for identifying flood risks, flood modeling and estimating potential floods.
Somanath also briefed the minister on developing a prototype solution that integrates flood risk with rescue and rehabilitation planning with satellite communication capabilities. He briefed the Minister on the role of space-based support that could be expanded to disaster management.
