The 45th Chess Olympiad begins today in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
The 45th Chess Olympiad will be held in the Hungarian capital Budapest from today till the 23rd. A record number of 197 teams are participating in the open category and 184 teams in the women’s category.
The Open category team consists of Arjun Erikaisi, D. Gukesh, R. Pragnananda, Vidit Gujarati and Harikrishna Pendala. The women’s team consists of D. Harika, R. Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vandika Aggarwal and Thania Sachdev.
Apart from the Indians, current world champion Ding Liren of China, Papiano Caruna of the United States and Levon Aronion of France are participating. This is the second time in a row that the Russian team did not participate in the tournament due to Russia’s ban on international sports due to the war on Ukraine.
The tournament is conducted in total 11 rounds. 2 points will be awarded to the winning team in each round and 1 point each for a draw. The top 3 teams at the end of 11 rounds will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
Played in the ‘Swiss’ format, each match will be allotted 1½ hours each. After the 40th piece move, an additional 30 minutes will be given for the remainder of the game. Also from the start the rate increases by 30 seconds for each move. Teams of 4 will face each other in a round.
Last time the Indian team won the bronze medal in both the categories. But this time India is a much stronger team than before and is aiming for the gold medal.
