It has been revealed that 251 of the members elected to the 18th Parliament have criminal cases pending against them and 27 members have been convicted in criminal cases. A news package about it.
The 18th Lok Sabha elections in India, the world’s largest democracy, started on April 19 and took place in 7 phases. Election results for a total of 543 seats are out.
The National Democratic Alliance led by Prime Minister Modi has won 293 seats and is in power. Prime Minister Modi is back as Prime Minister for the third time.
This time, the Organization for Democratic Reforms has published a report based on the information provided by the members who have been elected to Parliament in their election documents.
According to the statement, the number of Lok Sabha members with criminal background is increasing from 125 in 2009, 185 in 2014 and 233 in 2019.
This year, out of 543 members, 46 percent ie 251 members have reported criminal cases and 27 members are convicted criminals.
It is noteworthy that this is 124 percent more than in 2009. 170 members of the 18th Lok Sabha are under investigation in serious criminal cases like murder, attempted murder, human trafficking, robbery, sexual violence and crime against women, which is 31 percent of the total number of members.
It has been reported that 4 people have been charged in murder cases, 27 in attempted murder cases, 4 in kidnapping cases, 43 in hate speech cases, 15 in anti-women cases and 4 in sexual assault cases.
The report shows that a person with a criminal record has a 15.3 percent chance of winning a Lok Sabha election, while a person with no criminal record has a mere 4.4 percent chance of winning.
The Election Commission had already informed the Supreme Court that during a Public Interest Litigation, recommendations had already been sent to the Central Government in 1997 and 1998 to prevent the interference of criminals in politics, but the then Central Congress Government had not taken any decision in this regard.
Moreover, the Election Commission had also requested that the Supreme Court should issue an order without asking Parliament to pass the law again.
Insisting that a strict law should be enacted to ban political criminals and those facing criminal charges from contesting the elections, the Supreme Court had also said that a law should be enacted to remove those accused from the party.
Moreover, the roots of Indian politics are being undermined by corrupt people and criminals. Recently, criminals are getting involved in politics and contesting elections more and more. It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court expressed concern that this trend would undermine the dignity of democracy.
