Tamil Nadu BJP State President Annamalai has urged to abandon the attempt to close Nagai Government General Hospital.
In his statement, “More than one lakh people such as fishermen and farmers are living in Nagapattinam city areas and about 4 lakh people are living in the rural areas around the city. Government Head Hospital located in Nagapattinam city. It has been functioning for more than a hundred years. In Nagapattinam District Government General Hospital, more than a thousand patients were receiving treatment every day, both inpatients and outpatients.
With a view to a medical college for the district, our Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Mr. After Narendra Modi gave permission to set up a medical college in Nagapattinam district, on 7th March 2020, the foundation stone of a medical college was laid at Orathur village. Later, on January 12, 2022, our Prime Minister inaugurated 11 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, including Nagapattinam Government Medical College, through a video.
A medical college is not meant to disrupt the medical infrastructure that the public is already enjoying but to provide basic infrastructure to train new doctors. However, knowing that the DMK government was about to relocate the District Government General Hospital, which has been in use for over a hundred years, the BJP members of Nagapattinam district opposed the plan to completely transfer the Nagapattinam Government Hospital to Orathur Medical College and demanded that departments including the Emergency Department should continue to function in the Government General Hospital. They staged a protest on May 17, 2023, insisting on the demands that the buildings should not be converted into medical warehouses.
As a result, even today, Nagai BJP is facing legal cases filed by the DMK government. The public had been making continuous demands and protesting that the Nagai Government General Hospital should not be relocated.
In this situation, on March 4 this year, Chief Minister Stalin inaugurated the buildings for the medical college at Orathur village. After that, ignoring the strong opposition of the public, all the departments, including the emergency department, which were functioning in Nagai Government General Hospital, were completely shifted to Orathur Government Medical College, which is 15 kilometers away from Nagai city. Due to this, lakhs of people around Nagai city have been affected.
It is said that adequate bus facilities and road facilities are not provided for the medical college hospital set up at Orathur. For emergency treatment, maternity treatment etc., traveling to Orathur village which is 15 km away is quite difficult. When the Tanjore Medical College was started some 60 years ago, the Raza Mrisudar Government Hospital operating in the heart of Tanjore was neither relocated nor closed down.
