Senthil Balaji is currently facing significant political challenges, primarily due to legal complications. Although he temporarily lost his ministerial post, the situation is such that he might be forced to resign from it permanently. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested him in June 2023, in connection with allegations that he accepted bribes during his tenure as Transport Minister in the AIADMK government, promising jobs in exchange for money. This has put his political career under a cloud of uncertainty.
Senthil Balaji was arrested last year during his tenure as the Electricity Minister in the DMK government, due to allegations of corruption related to his previous role in the transport department. Despite multiple attempts to secure bail, his applications were consistently rejected by various courts. However, in a recent development, the Supreme Court granted him conditional bail. The bail came with strict conditions, primarily because Senthil Balaji is currently not in office, reducing the risk of tampering with evidence.
The Supreme Court, while granting bail, imposed several conditions. Senthil Balaji is required to appear in person at the Enforcement Directorate’s office every Monday and Friday to sign documents. Additionally, he must surrender his passport, and ensure that he does not tamper with evidence. He is also required to attend court hearings on the first Saturday of every month.
The cases against Senthil Balaji are still being heard in the Principal Sessions Court in Chennai. As part of this ongoing legal process, Senthil Balaji appeared in court today, where the judge ordered him to appear again on October 4 for further hearings. Senthil Balaji had requested to postpone the case until October 14, but the court rejected his request.
This ongoing legal battle and the conditions attached to his bail have created a complicated scenario for Senthil Balaji. Even though he has been granted conditional freedom, his ministerial future remains uncertain, and the pressure to resign from his post is mounting.
