Wayanad landslide: Death toll rises to 357- Rescue operation continues for 6th day
The Kerala government has issued an ordinance declaring the Wayanad disaster as a state disaster.
A terrible landslide occurred in Wayanad district of Kerala state on 30th of last month. In this, the villages of Poonjiridhod, Mundakai, Suralmalai and Attamalai were destroyed. Army is engaged in rescue operations in landslide affected areas. Rescue teams are searching for the missing using radar equipment and cell phone GPS. As more than 200 people could not be found, rescue operations are still ongoing. The death toll in the landslide has risen to 257.
148 bodies have been identified. Also 81 people including 34 women, 36 men and 11 children were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment in hospitals. Also 206 people who were injured and treated have been shifted to relief camps.
2,597 people belonging to 707 families are accommodated in 17 relief camps in Meppadi. They are provided with food and clothes there. 10,000 people have been accommodated in a total of 91 camps in Wayanad district. The status of the mysterious 200 is not known. It is feared that the death toll may rise. The rescue operation is going on for the 6th day. The Kerala government demanded modern radar equipment to detect those buried deep in the soil. Accordingly, one radar from the Army’s Northern Zone and 4 RECO radars and operators from Delhi will be flown in.
The military will use drones and radars capable of probing deep into the ground. It has been informed that henceforth relief work will be carried out to recover bodies and restore essential services.
