Subhanshu Shukla was born on October 10, 1985 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The 38-year-old Shukla was commissioned into the fighter wing of the Indian Air Force in June 2006.
Shukla has served as a flight captain and an experienced pilot, and has served well. He has been a Category-1 flight instructor and test pilot.
Shukla has over 2,000 hours of flying experience in various aircraft including SUKAI-30 MKI, MIG-21, MIG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, AN-32.
He has received the highest award ‘Sword of Honour’ from the Indian Air Force Academy.
In 2019, Shukla was selected by ISRO and underwent rigorous training at the Yuri Gagarin Space Training Centre in Star City, Moscow.
This year, ISRO plans to send humans into space under the Gaganyaan programme.
Four astronauts – Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, Angad Pratap, Ajit Krishnan and Subhanshu Shukla – were selected for the programme.
In advance of this, ISRO had signed an agreement with NASA to send an astronaut from the Gaganyaan programme to the International Space Station on the Axiom Mission 4 mission.

Axiom 4 will carry Captain Shukla, along with Polish, Hungarian, and American astronauts. They will spend up to 14 days on the space station and conduct research.
Captain Subhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force was sent to NASA for training last year to go to space as part of NASA’s Axiom Mission program.
Captain Subhanshu Shukla trained at the European Space Agency, Japan’s AERO SPACE EXPLORATION, and Japan Manned Space Systems Corporation.
In this context, NASA has approved the four-man mission to the International Space Station, led by former NASA astronaut Peggy.
NASA has announced that Shukla will be the pilot of this mission. With this, Shukla will create history by becoming the first Indian to go to the International Space Station.
Speaking about this, Shukla said that it will encourage future generations of Indians to undertake space missions. He also said that even if an individual goes to space, it is the space mission of 140 crore Indians.
Shukla said that he is in touch with Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to go to space, and is receiving his advice and guidance.
It is noteworthy that Rakesh Sharma went to space in 1984 under the Soviet Union’s space exploration program.
