The BJP has threatened that if the special status for the Kalyana Karnataka region is removed, it will demand the separation of North Karnataka and the creation of a separate state. The BJP MLA said that the special status given to Kalyana Karnataka under Article 371J of the Constitution should not be removed. Basanagowda Patil Yatnal emphasized.
In Karnataka, Belagavi, Bagalkot, Bidar, Kalburgi, Yadgir, Raichur, Bellary, Koppal, Dharwart, Haveri are known as Hyderabad Karnataka or Kalyana Karnataka. These were different areas during the Nizam of Hyderabad and British rule. Later merged with Karnataka. It was only in 2019 that Hyderabad-Karnataka was renamed as Kalyana Karnataka.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir was granted special status under Article 370 of the Constitution. The central government revoked this special status. Similarly, in 2012, the then Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government granted special status to Kalyana Karnataka under Article 371 (J) of the Constitution. A separate board was also set up for the development of Kalyana Karnataka at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore. It was also mandated to give up to 80% preference in employment to those belonging to Kalyana Karnataka regions.
However, since 2018, protests and complete blockades continue to be held since 2018, accusing Karnataka governments of neglecting Kalyana Karnataka and demanding a separate state of Vada Karnataka. The Krishna and Magadai watershed issues are also very important in this region. The Krishna water issue is related to the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana. Cases related to this also went to the Supreme Court.
It is against this backdrop that BJP MLA Basanagowda Patil Yatnal has spoken about the North Karnataka state demand. Speaking to reporters in Vijayapura yesterday, Basanagowda Patil Yatnal said efforts to remove the special status for Kalyana Karnataka should be abandoned. If the special status of Kalyana Karnataka is removed then we will insist on the demand of separate state of North Karnataka. Abbots should not interfere in the affairs of any party government. He said that he had no right to interfere.
