In response to the farmers’ struggle, the BJP lost 38 seats in this Lok Sabha election and suffered a major setback.
Lok Sabha elections started last March. A month before that, the farmers’ protest towards the capital city of Delhi had started.
The central government took drastic measures to suppress the protest. Tear gas shells were fired at many places. The central government resorted to various new means to prevent the protesters from entering the capital.
M.S. Farmers have been protesting for the last 4 years demanding legal reference price for produce as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission.
Also, the farmers put forward many demands such as loan waiver, cancellation of privatization of power sector and withdrawal of cases filed against the protesters.
But, without holding talks, the central government launched very severe attacks on the protestors. The issue became a topic of conversation across the country. Opposition parties protested.
It has come to light that the Narendra Modi-led central government has ignored farmers’ demands, resulting in BJP losing the seats it had won in 2019 in various states.
Not only that; Union Minister for Farmers’ Welfare Arjun Munda has been defeated in Jharkhand by a huge margin. This news has come as a shock to the BJP.
The BJP has lost nearly 38 seats in West UP, Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and Maharashtra, where most onion farmers live. The reason for this is the farmers.
BJP leaders could not enter these places to campaign. So many candidates were stopped. Videos related to this also surfaced on social media.
Last February, when farmers resumed their protest marching towards Delhi, they were stopped at the Punjab-Haryana border.
Also farmers from Haryana and western UP were not allowed to enter the capital.
Experts say the impact of this farmers’ struggle has affected the BJP’s chances of victory in other states as well.
BJP Minister Ajay Mishra Theni’s son rammed his vehicle into the protestors against the farmers protest. The scene sparked nationwide protests.
Due to this incident, the BJP lost the elections in Muzaffar Nagar, Saharanpur, Kairana, Nagina, Moradabad, Chambal, Rampur, Lakhimpur Kheri in western UP.
Apart from 11 seats in Rajasthan and 5 seats in Haryana, the BJP has also lost 2 seats won in Punjab this time. BJP has lost 12 out of 13 seats in Maharashtra, which has a majority of onion farmers.
“The central government has taken many decisions against the interests of onion farmers and traders, which has led to a fall in prices,” said Kantu Kaka Devre, president of the Nashik District Onion Traders Association.
He said that the anger of onion farmers is still burning and they will again act against the government in the upcoming assembly elections.
Farmers’ organization Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has congratulated the BJP for not getting a majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
