What is gotra? May we know about its importance?
Usually in love marriages, the elders in the house are going to get married to someone who doesn’t know the clan and gotra? They will ask. Similarly, when looking for a girl for marriage, some people have a habit of taking a girl from the same tribe.
Some take women from different gotras. Moreover, brother and sister clans are avoided. For example, Vishwamitra Gotra and Kausika Gotra are brothers and sisters, so these Gotrakars do not give women or take women.
The reason is that Vishwamitra and Kaushikar are brothers and so the people who get married will come in the same relationship. Now is an exception to all that. Tribe is important to every family. Even if you go to temples, you have to tell the name, star and gotra.
But some people avoid saying the gotra and do the archan by saying only the name and the star. Some people don’t even know the gotra. So we can know what is gotra and what is its importance.
In this regard, Tulsi has said on the website called Kora: “Gothram is the lineage that continues from banana to banana.”
This gotra is the basic genetic basis of one’s physical and psychological characteristics.
Gotram is only applicable to male lineage and not female.
To explain. In the continuous process of human genetic inheritance, a man is only half male and half female in his genetic makeup. But a woman is a woman in all her genetics.
The basic reason for this is that chromosome 23 in the male gene and chromosome 23 in the female gene play an important role.
In which male has y+x male+female chromosome. A female also has a female chromosome called x+x.
Is the child in a dynasty male? Or a woman? A man’s genes decide that. This is because only males have a male gene known as y. Females do not have the male y chromosome.
Only when a male’s “y” chromosome joins a female’s “x” chromosome, y+x will produce a male child.
Girls are born only when a male’s x chromosome joins a female’s x chromosome.
In this case the gotra is the gene y which is passed on from male to male through genetics. He said that it has been passed down from father to son as a banana for a long time.
Similarly, Tirutham Pon Saravanan, researcher at Annamalai University, has said:
Gotram, Caste, Kulam are Tamil words. As usual, these are also thought of as Sanskrit.
The Tamil word Sathu means gathering. It has been studied in many hymns in Sangha literature. In the beginning people used to live in different groups i.e. congregations. One party will enter into relationship for business, marriage etc. depending on their compatibility with another party.
The word caste was born from the word satu which means gathering.
Satu >>> caste
From this we can know that caste is a Tamil word. Kulam is another Tamil word that appears like this. Shaking means addition, accumulation. From this comes the word Kulam.
Clan >>> Clan
Kulam is also a Tamil word.
As groups proliferated, delineations were made as to which clan/caste/group members could marry whom. The ability to get a man/woman for matrimonial relationship was called gotra.
Kol (=Ku) + Katam (=Type) = Kotiram >>> Gotram = type of taking.
All the three Tamil words caste, kulam and gotram were later converted into Tamil.
Caste >>> Sa^th
clan >>> clan
Gotram >>> Go~tra
The historical fact is that there is no evidence of when all these appeared in any race. :)) said.
Similarly, Hariharan has said:
“Gotram” is from the Sanskrit word “Tamil” – group, clan, clan, branch.
1.Sengundarkaikola Mudaliar, Kongu Velalar, Kongu Nadar, Agamudayar, Kallar, Pallar – etc. tribe is called “group”.
- Nadathi Nadar caste is called “Indi”.
- People of Maravar tribe call it “branch”.
- Chettiar tribe of Nattukottai city is called “temple house”. (This community has nine temples (gotram).
5.Some other castes call gotra as “partner caste”. Thus explanations have been given about the gotra.
