The incident of the local people spreading a red carpet for a distance of 6 km to welcome the devotees of Lord Murugan who were going on a foot pilgrimage near Sivaganga to avoid getting their feet pricked by stones and thorns has caused a stir.
It is a tradition that certain communities from areas including Tirupattur, Karaikudi, and Devakottai in Sivaganga district gather in Kundrakudi every year and from there, carry Kavadis on their shoulders and go on a foot pilgrimage via Pillayarpatti and Tirupattur to have darshan of Lord Murugan of Palani on the Thaipusam festival.
In this way, this year, the devotees who are going on a foot pilgrimage carrying Kavadis were welcomed by the local people by spreading a red carpet for a distance of about 6 km in Kandavarayanpatti to avoid getting their feet pricked by stones and thorns.
Upon reaching Palani on the Thaipusam festival, they will climb the mountain on the day of Maham Nakshatra and offer Kavadis and complete their worship.
