Lighting a Traditional Oil Lamp – The Significance and Rituals
Lighting an oil lamp (known as “Kuthu Vilakku” in Tamil) is a deeply symbolic and traditional practice in Indian culture. It represents the dispelling of darkness, both literally and metaphorically, and is seen as an auspicious act that brings positive energy, prosperity, and peace. This practice is commonly observed in homes, temples, offices, and businesses as a way of inviting good fortune and harmony.

Oil:
- Sesame oil, coconut oil, or ghee (clarified butter) are the preferred oils for lighting the lamp. It is important that the oil is pure and clean.
Turmeric, Kumkum (Vermilion), and Flower Offerings:

Arranging the Wick:
- Roll the cotton wicks and place them in the lamp, facing the desired directions. Typically, wicks are placed in the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) and one in the center.
Adding Turmeric and Kumkum:
- Apply a small amount of turmeric and kumkum on the lamp to enhance its auspiciousness.
Lighting the Lamp at the Right Time:
