The century-old Dhageswari Hindu temple in Bangladesh is one of the symbols of religious and communal harmony.
In Bangladesh, the people’s protest against the government has intensified since last July. The controversial issue of allocating 30 percent of government jobs to relatives of Bangladesh Liberation War veterans erupted into violence.
Last July, up to 300 people were killed in this demonstration, which was attended by students and others, insisting that this reservation should be put to an end. In this, on the last 5-days many students and public were involved in active protest.
As a result, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned. He left Dhaka Palace for safety and came to India and took refuge. After this, the protest intensified and many people died. In total, more than 500 people lost their lives in the violence.
On the one hand, information spread that after the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government, violence against Hindus spread. Thus, Hindus in Bangladesh were advised to be cautious. In this case, there is a centuries-old Dhageswari temple in the Dhaka city of the country.
Named as ‘Mother of All Humans’, this temple is visited by many members of the Hindu community. There are many mosques nearby. In this case, after the overthrow of the Hasina government, Hindus and Muslims are visiting this temple in large numbers to protect it.
Ashim Maitro, one of the main priests of the temple, says that people of various religions come to this temple to have darshan of Sami. Mother (God) is the mother of all human beings whether they are Hindus, Muslims, Christians or Buddhists. They come to seek comfort, prosperity and peace of mind.
He said the temple is one of the symbols of religious and communal harmony. Hasina has said that when she went to India and took shelter, she was in the temple and no one came to the temple, the temple committee members were inside, leaving the temple doors and entrance closed and there was no police force.
At that time, local community members were helpful. Outside the temple, many Hindus and Muslims stood guard for safety. Due to this, no harm was done to the temple. He said that there has been no harm since that day and that offerings are being made every day without interruption.
