Bangladesh was ruled by the Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In this case, 300 people were killed last July when the issue of 30 percent reservation in government jobs erupted violently. In the last 2 days, more than a hundred protesters have died. Many were injured.
Following the violence, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned. However, Parliament and the Prime Minister’s House were ransacked by the protesters. Hasina fled the country with her sister. He has taken refuge in India.
In this situation, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Begum Khalita Zia has been released from house arrest. The President of the country Mohammad Sakhabuddin has issued the order for this. Along with this, the President has released all those arrested from July 1st to August 5th.
Begum Khaleda Zia, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), holds the distinction of being the country’s first female Prime Minister. His birthday is coming up on 15th. As he celebrates his 79th birthday in a few days, his release from house arrest is a gift for him.
He has stayed away from politics for many years. Doctors said that he has various ailments including diabetes and heart problems.
In the past, he worked with Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father, Awami League leader Mujibur Rahman. This ended the military rule of Usain Mohammad Ershad in 1990.
But the collaboration between the two did not last long. Khaleda Zia won the election after defeating Hasina. He also became the first Prime Minister.
After this, the president changed the practice and introduced a parliamentary form of government instead. Thus, the power rests with the Prime Minister. Removed restrictions on foreign investment. He also made reforms such as making primary education compulsory and free.
In this context, after Sheikh Hasina became Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia was sentenced to 17 years in prison on various corruption charges. He was placed under house arrest. After nearly 6 years in custody, President Shakhuddin has ordered the release of Zia.
