Bangladesh’s interim government headed by Mohammad Yunus is set to take office today.
Bangladesh was ruled by Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. Meanwhile, a protest broke out against the provision of 30 percent reservation in government jobs to the family members of those who participated in the country’s liberation war. As the protest intensified, Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister and took refuge in India.
After Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister, President Mohammad Sahabuddin ordered the dissolution of the country’s parliament. Subsequently, the President announced the appointment of Mohammad Yunus as the head of the interim government. Mohammad Yunus, who has gone to Paris for the Olympic Games, will soon return to the country to take charge of the interim government.
In this situation, the interim government headed by Mohammad Yunus will take office today, Bangladesh Army Commander Wakar-Uz-Zaman has said. Meanwhile, Muhammad Yunus called on all parties, including the protestors, to refrain from all forms of violence and maintain peace.
Speaking at a press conference in the capital Dhaka earlier, Army Chief Waqar-Uz-Zaman said, “We are making all-out efforts to hold the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow (today). It was proposed to be held in the afternoon, but Muhammad Yunus is expected to arrive in the country only at 2:10 PM. The Interim Government Advisory Committee 15 “The armed forces will extend all support to the interim government chief, Prof. Muhammad Yunus,” he said.
The death toll in the protest has risen to 469
Even after 2 days since Sheikh Hasina left the country, the violence of the protesters has not stopped there. Awami League leaders and their families are being brutally attacked. In the last 2 days alone, 29 people have been murdered, including the ruling party’s dignitaries and their families.
Protesters ransacked more than 400 police stations across the country in the last two days. According to reports, around 50 policemen were killed in the violence. After this, the total number of people who lost their lives in the protest against the government increased to 469.
