The Paralympic Games for the Disabled begin today.
The world’s biggest sports festival, the 33rd Olympic Games, recently concluded in a grand manner in Paris, the capital of France. USA tops the medal list. India got 6 medals.
In this situation, the 17th Paralympic Games for the differently-abled will begin in Paris today. 4,400 players from 184 countries will participate in this tournament, which will be held until the 8th of next month (September). Games are classified and conducted according to physical impairment. Gold medals are awarded for 549 races in 22 sports.
India has a team of 84 players including 32 women. This is India’s highest tally in Paralympics. Young and experienced, they are waiting to showcase their skills in 12 sports – Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Cycling, Judo, Weightlifting, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Rowing and Canoeing.
6 members from Tamil Nadu are Mariyappan (high jump), Tulsimathi, Manisha Ramadoss, Nitya Sreesivan, Sivarajan Solaimalai (all 4 badminton) and Kasthuri Rajamani (powerlifting).
Spectacular art performances, dance, adventures, parade of sportsmen and women will take place at the opening ceremony which starts at 11.30 PM IST tonight. 65 thousand fans are expected to witness the opening ceremony.
