In a clash that took place near Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district when the police chased away a container lorry that ran away with robbers, 2 policemen were injured and one member of the gang was killed in the encounter with the police and 5 people were arrested.
Kerala Thrissur district police had alerted the district police including Coimbatore, Salem and Namakkal about the gang that escaped after looting in Kerala. The alert also stated that the robbers may escape in a white car or container.
It is said that when the state police tried to catch a container truck at two different checkpoints near Palakkad, it escaped and entered the Tamil Nadu border. In this case, the police tried to stop the container at Webbadi Nalrotu section next to Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district. At that time, as if to collide with the police, the lorry turned towards Tiruchengode at high speed, and the container lorry went fast without stopping after hitting 2 cars and 4 bikes parked there.
Subsequently, the police chased away the container lorry. Police surrounded the container near Pachampalayam and pelted stones at the driver to stop the lorry, breaking the front glass of the lorry. When the container lorry turned to the right side of the road, Assistant Inspector of Police Ranjith and Kumarapalayam Police Station Inspector Tavamani approached the container lorry and tried to escape by attacking the lorry with a machete. While both of them were injured, the police fired in self-defence, and Ottovar died on the spot. It is said that on hearing the sound of gunshots, 6 people hiding inside the container lorry opened the door and surrendered with their hands raised. Police have arrested a total of 6 people.
On opening the container, the police found a white Hyundai Creta car with cash in hand. The police have confirmed that the money was looted from 3 ATM machines in Thrissur, Kerala early on Friday morning.
Thrissur District SP Ilango has confirmed that the hoodlums who broke the machines in 3 SBI ATMs located a few kilometers away in Thrissur with gas cutters and looted Rs 65 lakhs were trapped in Namakkal. The police are trying to identify the car and people involved in the crime using the CCTV footage recorded at the scene of the robbery.
Thrissur S.P. said that this gang used to load the looted money in a container along with the car in the style of Theeran film, hide it and sprinkle dirt in the eyes of the police and flee to foreign states. Ilango said.
He also said that the Kerala special forces police has rushed to catch and interrogate the people trapped in Namakall. The DGP has praised the Namakkal District Police for risking their lives and encircling the escaped ATM robbery gang without getting caught by the Kerala Police.
