The Brahmotsava festival is going to be held from 4th to 12th of next month at the world famous Eyumalayan Temple in Tirupati Tirumala. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam has made elaborate arrangements for this. On the evening of the first day (October 4), Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu will present official silk robes to Venkateswara Swamy on behalf of the state government and participate in the Periya Shekha Vahana Seva to have darshan of the Swami.
With four days left for the Brahmotsava festival, let’s take a look at the information released by the Tirumala-Tirupathi Devasthanam about the significance of the multi-colored flower garlands adorning Venkatachalapati.

All the garlands that decorate Venkatachalapati every day are blessed. There are many flower garlands decorated for Moolavar Venkatachalapati. Out of which 8 garlands are very special. Apart from this it also includes a 100 feet long floral arrangement for Moolavar and other deities in the sanctum sanctorum. This decoration takes place every morning and evening.
A dozen varieties of flowers, half a dozen varieties of aromatic leaves are used in daily flower services up to 150 kg. While on Thursdays, nearly 250 kg of seasonal flowers are used to decorate the moolava for the pulangi service. These garlands and flowers play an important role in Etummalayan temple. Each flower has a specific significance in temple mythology. The beauty of these garlands is well depicted in Nammalwar’s Tiruvaimozhi.

Chikamani: A single garland decorated from the crown to both shoulders is called ‘Chikamani’. It is a large wreath measuring eight feet in length.
Saligram: Two garlands measuring four feet long each. Each one touches and decorates the Saligrama radius of the Moolah. Hence it is called Saligrama Mala.
Gandasari: This is a garland that covers the neck area of Venkatachalapati. Two garlands of 3.5 feet length each are worn.
Vakshadala Lakshmi: These are the two garlands decorated for Sridevi and Bhudevi, who are placed on either side of Venkatachalapati’s divine chest. Each garland is 1.5 feet long.
Conch-Chakra garlands: Conch and Chakra, the divine weapons of Venkatachalapati, are garlanded with garlands of one foot each. These are called conch wheel garlands.
Kathari Saram: This garland will be decorated for the divine weapon Nandagam of the Seven Hills. It is two feet long.
Davalas: These are three garlands that cover both the elbows and hips of the devotee and are hung so that they touch the holy feet.
Tiruvadi garlands: These garlands are decorated exclusively for the feet of Venkatachalapati.
Thus all the special garlands that are decorated to the Moolah every day are kept in the flower shop room called Pula Aara located in the temple premises.
Besides adorning Moolavar Venkatachalapati, Utsavar Malayapasamy, Sridevi, Bhudevi, Bhoka Srinivasa Murthy, Kolu Srinivasa Murthy and his two goddesses Sridevi, Bhudevi, Ukra Srinivasa Murthy and his two goddesses Sridevi, Bhudevi are decorated with a flower garland each.
Also to Sita, Rama, Lakshmana, Rukmini Srikrishna, Chakradthalwar, Angadhan, Sugreevar, Anjaneyar, Ananthar, Vishwaksenaar, Garuda, Jaya-Vijayan, Bangaru Vakili Garudalwar, Varadaraja Swami, Vagulamatha, Ramanujar, Yoga Narasimha, Bedi Anjaneyar, Varaha Swami, Konigattu Anjaneyar. (Sunday only) garlands are put on and decorated.
