Death toll rises to 405 in Wayanad landslide
Terrible landslides occurred in Mundakkai, Suralmalai and Meppadi areas of Wayanad district of Kerala on the 30th. Not only these villages, the nearby villages of Attamalai, Punchirimattam and Vellirimalai also collapsed due to the landslide. Houses, roads, vehicles and bridges were swept away by the force of the landslide. As a result, the villagers were buried in the soil and swept away by the wild floods. Many more disappeared.
The people rescued from the landslide have taken shelter in the relief camps. Rescue teams are searching for those buried in the soil and missing people.
In this situation, today is the 8th day of rescue operations. Based on modern equipment radar signal is being searched for people buried in the ground and trapped in building ruins. Search operations are underway with modern equipment in areas where there is a high possibility of finding bodies.
So far 405 people have died due to landslides. 180 people are still missing. Around 4,833 people from Suralmalai village and Mundakai and Attamalai areas have been affected by the landslide. Apart from this, the tourists who came to enjoy the tourist attractions including the waterfall were staying in the hotels. It is not known what happened to them. The death toll is feared to rise as bodies continue to be recovered from the river.
Meanwhile, it was decided to bury the unidentified and unclaimed bodies of the landslide victims in the public graveyard. According to this, the bodies of 39 people were buried yesterday at one place with interfaith prayers.
Schools in Wayanad district have been closed for the past one week due to landslides. In this situation, schools were opened from yesterday.
