Hindu Front organizations held a protest in Palakkanatham, Madurai regarding the Thiruparankundram issue.
Hindu organizations had already announced that they would be protesting today due to the controversy that arose over non-vegetarian food being served on the Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai district. In this situation, the District Collector has issued prohibitory orders under Section 144 around Thiruparankundram in Madurai district since yesterday, and a large number of police officers have been deployed in and around Thiruparankundram and are engaged in security work.
Meanwhile, Hindu organizations have filed a petition in the High Court seeking permission for the protest, and the High Court has said that the petition will be heard today. Following this, police have been deployed on the road leading to the Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple, the road leading to the Kashi Vishwanathar Temple on the hill, the Sikandar Dargah, and in front of the mosque below since yesterday.
This morning, BJP General Secretary Rama Srinivasan was taken into custody at his house in Madurai. Hindu Makkal Katchi Madurai district president Solaikannan and former BJP district president Rajaratnam were arrested. Hindu Munnani state president Kadeshwara Subramanian was arrested in Tiruppur.
Meanwhile, volunteers who gathered in front of the Thiruparankundram Murugan temple with BJP flags and chanted slogans were arrested without the knowledge of the police.
In this context, the Madurai branch of the High Court, which heard the petition filed on behalf of the Hindu Munnani this afternoon, granted permission to hold the protest. The judges had also said in their order that slogans should not be raised in the protest that criticized religion and individuals or that would cause problems, that the public should not be disturbed, that more than one microphone should not be used, and that party flags should not be used.
In this situation, after the High Court granted permission to Hindu organizations to hold a protest from 5 pm to 6 pm, more than 700 Hindu Front and Hindu organizations have gathered in the Palakkanatham Roundabout area in Madurai. Following this, more than 400 police officers have been deployed for security. Temporary traffic changes have also been made around this area.
