The BJP State Annamalai has urged the DMK government to ensure that all the workers engaged in cleaning work are provided with adequate protective equipment.
In his X post about this,
The news of the death of a municipal corporation contract employee who was working to repair an underground sewer near Avadi is shocking. My deepest condolences to his family.
Last week, in Cuddalore, we strongly condemned the sanitation workers who were made to go down into the sewers to clean them without even providing them with basic safety equipment.
But even after that, the DMK government did not ensure that the workers were provided with protective equipment, yet another life was lost. In the state of Uttar Pradesh, the state government has taken legal action against contractors who caused the deaths of workers by not providing safety equipment.
But in Tamil Nadu, which has the highest number of fatalities in the country, no action seems to have been taken against contractors who did not provide safety equipment to workers.
In Tamil Nadu, even though the death toll continues in the sewerage and waste water disposal work, the DMK government is not concerned and does not take any measures to prevent them.
Annamalai has urged the DMK government to immediately ensure that adequate safety equipment is provided to all the workers engaged in cleaning work and to pay Rs 30 lakh as compensation to the families of the deceased workers as per the Supreme Court verdict.
