Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, has said that the registration process has been streamlined to protect vehicles, including antique cars.
In the country, Balar has been treasuring ancient ‘cars’. Exhibitions of such vehicles are also held from time to time. The federal government has regularized its registration activities to protect such vehicles.
In this connection, the Minister Gadkari said in a post on his Facebook page:
Due to the lack of rules for regulating the registration of antique vehicles in many states, the new regulations, which are currently being introduced, will allow registration activities to take place without hindrance. It also has the special feature of retaining those numbers if these vehicles are already registered. The new registration of these vehicles will be numbered with a unique ‘VA’ registration code.
The Central Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended the existing rules to regulate the registration process of antique vehicles. It aims to protect and promote antique vehicles in India.
Two-wheelers and 4-wheelers over the age of fifty can be classified as vintage vehicles if they have been maintained in its old form without any significant changes.
If you apply for registration of these vehicles, the State Registration Authority will issue the registration certificate within 60 days.
Vehicles already registered can keep the original registration mark. However, for the new record, a separate record identification will be provided. The first two letters are the state code, ‘VA’, which means ‘ancient vehicle’. The letters, followed by two letters, will be the numbers assigned by the State Registration Authority from 0001 to 9999.
Fee for new registration – Rs. 20,000. Re-registration fee – Rs. 5,000.
Vehicles registered as such vintage should not be driven on the roads for regular personal use or commercial use.
