The situation is changing that there is no way out for international trade except China. Countries of the world are relying on India as an alternative to China. India’s ports are being expanded ahead of China. A news collection about it.
Ports are very important to the global economy. 70 percent of international cargo passes through ports.
Four of the five largest container ports in the world are in China. And only five of the top 20 ports internationally are now located outside East Asia.
Most East Asia-America-Europe and African cargo ships pass through the Indian Ocean region. India has a coastline of 7517 km. About 95 percent of India’s trade is carried out by sea. It is 70 percent of India’s total trade value.
India has 12 major and 205 minor and intermediate ports. Cargo traffic at 12 major Indian ports has increased by 6.8 percent in June.
In particular, Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra recorded a growth of around 15.12 percent. Subsequently, Cochin Port has handled more cargo.
One out of every 4 shipping containers transiting through India is loaded or unloaded on ships heading south of Mumbai into the Arabian Sea. The flow of cargo containers has almost tripled in the last 10 years.
In the midst of a conflict in trade relations between the US and China, there has been a disruption in the international business supply chain. Regardless of who wins the next US presidency, US-China trade relations are expected to remain volatile.
Jawaharlal Nehru Ports Authority Chairman Unmesh Sharad Wak said, “The world countries have chosen India as the best alternative to China as they do not want to be completely dependent on China.
For example, major retailers like Walmart are shifting their distribution base to India.
Already at Jawaharlal Nehru Port, two terminals have been constructed, doubling the size of one of the five terminals.
In this case, on June 19, the Union Cabinet approved the development of Vadawan deep sea port near Dahanu in Maharashtra at a cost of 76,200 crore rupees.
The project is expected to handle 298 million metric tonnes of cargo per annum and the port will be one of the top 10 ports in the world when completed.
The port is being built to contribute to the local economy by creating direct and indirect employment opportunities for around 10 lakh people as per the objective of Prime Minister Modi’s Kathi Shakti scheme.
The new port will include nine container terminals. Each is 1000 meters long, with four multi-purpose berths, offshore berth, four liquid cargo berths, one Ro-Ro berth and one Coast Guard berth. It is being built to accommodate the world’s largest container ships. That is, it is set up to be capable of handling cargo ships large enough to hold 24,000 boxes. Other ports in India can handle vessels carrying 18,000 containers.
About 25 percent of India’s cargo to Europe and East Asia is routed through ports in Singapore, Dubai, United Arab Emirates or Colombo, Sri Lanka. This results in higher costs for the Indian exporter.
The new port India is building aims to reduce such costs and speed up delivery times.
Meanwhile, the new international port in Kerala is also being designed to accommodate large container ships in an automated manner.
And to accommodate the growing number of goods, the central government is also keen on building improved roads and railways to speed up transportation.
Unmesh Sharad Wak, chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Ports Authority (JNPA), has expressed his hope that India will soon emerge as a better alternative to China, even though the dock workers’ strike in India’s 12 major ports has hampered the development of India’s shipping industry.
