Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office, India’s foreign policy has seen significant transformations. Modi’s strategic diplomacy in managing relationships with various nations and addressing challenges has been lauded by political experts, bringing India to a new level of global recognition. The country has experienced substantial shifts in international relations and economic standing under his leadership.
India’s Initial Foreign Policy Approach
During the early years of independence, India’s foreign policy was characterized by the “Non-Aligned Movement” (NAM). At a time when the world was divided into two major blocs (the West led by the United States and the East led by the Soviet Union), India chose to remain neutral, maintaining its independent stance. This allowed India to emerge as a leader among non-aligned countries, fostering ties without aligning directly with either superpower.
Despite this, India also became a member of the British Commonwealth, showing a flexible approach in maintaining relations with former colonial powers. However, throughout the Cold War, India consistently upheld an independent and non-aligned foreign policy.
New Transformations Under PM Modi
After becoming Prime Minister in 2014, Modi brought a revolutionary shift to India’s foreign policy. He took notable steps to strengthen ties with foreign nations, marked by his numerous diplomatic visits. Inviting the leaders of South Asian countries to his first swearing-in ceremony was a symbolic gesture that signaled a rejuvenated approach to international diplomacy.
India launched new initiatives in the Indian Ocean region, like the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and IOR strategies. Modi also revitalized India’s “Look East Policy” by transforming it into the “Act East Policy,” which focused on enhancing relationships with Southeast Asian nations.
Relations with the U.S., Europe, and Asian Countries
Since 2016, India-U.S. relations have reached new heights. Despite their diverse political landscapes, the two nations have worked together on economic and security agreements. This partnership has led to several key defense and economic pacts.
Similarly, India strengthened its ties with Israel and Gulf countries, creating strong economic and strategic partnerships. India’s active role in the Quad alliance, which includes the U.S., Japan, and Australia, is also a testament to its growing international influence.
Geopolitical and Economic Alliances
In the new global geopolitical landscape, India has established numerous alliances and agreements. Initiatives like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), I2U2, and the International North-South Transit Corridor (INSTC) have expanded India’s global presence. These projects are seen as game-changers, enhancing India’s role in international trade and strategic planning. India’s efforts to mediate conflicts, such as the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, reflect the global trust in India’s diplomatic strength.
Modi 3.0 – Strengthening Global Relationships
During Modi’s third term, his strong ties with world leaders have only strengthened. The respect and recognition from figures like U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin underscore India’s growing global influence under Modi’s leadership.
India’s proactive role in strengthening the BRICS alliance, a powerful bloc challenging Western dominance, is also significant. India has managed to uphold its strategic autonomy, even when engaging closely with powerful blocs and countries.
India-China-U.S.: A Triangular Tension
Currently, the United States views China as its primary adversary. In this scenario, the U.S. has made efforts to align India on its side. India’s unique position is reflected in its deep economic ties with the U.S. and military collaboration with Russia.
Previously, India maintained a non-aligned stance in global politics, but under Modi, the country has confidently forged strong ties with both major powers and developing nations.
Under Modi’s leadership, India’s foreign relations have been built on a solid foundation of strategic alliances and robust diplomacy. This approach has elevated India’s stature on the global stage, making it a significant player in international politics and economics.
In this new era, India is rising as a country that not only commands economic power but also offers spiritual and strategic leadership to the world. India’s journey from a non-aligned nation to a powerful, assertive force on the global stage is a testament to its evolving foreign policy under Modi.
