Varalakshmi Vratham is considered special this year on the last Friday of the month of Adi.
Maha Vishnu’s consort Mahalakshmi is known as ‘Varalakshmi’ because she brings boons. Varalakshmi fast day is the day to welcome Mahalakshmi, the ruler of wealth, home. Varalakshmi fast is a special fast to worship Goddess Mahalakshmi. This fast can be observed by married and unmarried virgins. It is believed that a household that observes Varalakshmi fast every year without fail will have no poverty, marriage ban and married women will get Mangalya strength.
This year Varalakshmi Vrat is being observed on the day after tomorrow. This year Varalakshmi fast day falls on the last Friday of the month of Adi and it is considered special that it falls on the waxing Ekadasi fast day of Lord Vishnu.
How to perform puja?
It is customary for married women to wake up early in the morning, place Makkolam at the door, light a lamp, take Mahalakshmi from the door and chant various mantras.
Mahalakshmi decoration
The Kalasha for Puja should be decorated like Mahalakshmi. Place the Kumbha on the floorboard and put the Goddess’s face and crown on the coconut in the Kumbha. Also put on clothes, put turmeric, kumkum, put flowers and decorate. Then, place it at the door of the house and pray to Mahalakshmi to wake up in that casket. One should stand near the door and invite Mahalakshmi to enter the house by performing camphor aarti towards the outside. Then Mahalakshmi should be taken inside the house and made to sit in the place for puja.
Prayer
Now pretending that Mahalakshmi has come inside the house, you should perform poojas to the Mother. Panchamukha ghee lamp should be lit and food items such as betel nut, betel nut, fruit, ghee soaked sugar pongal, sundal should be prepared. After that, auspicious dotras can be recited. Songs dedicated to Mahalakshmi can be sung. Fasting rope should be tied and consecrated with flowers. 108 praises of Lakshmi, Lakshmi Ashtodrasham, Kanagaratha Stothram can be recited. People who cannot read should pray to Varalakshmi sincerely. “Mother Mahalakshmi should stay in our house forever. “Give us all the wealth” and complete the pooja by praying fervently.
The nonpucharadi kept during the puja should be tied around the neck along with yellow kumkum flowers. Sumangali women should wear a talik rope during this fast and perform pooja.
In a simple way..
On Varalakshmi, those who do not have the facilities to worship the face of the goddess by making a kalasam can simply use copper or copper anvils to make a kalasam. If the goddess does not have a face, just put turmeric on coconut and put kunguma tilak on it and worship it. Those who cannot set up a kalasam can worship with the image of the Goddess. Those who don’t have a picture of Mahalakshmi can light a lamp in a small bowl and worship it as Mahalakshmi.
Those who cannot afford any expensive items can worship with betel nut and 2 bananas. People who have little means can worship with Sugar Pongal. Those who cannot perform puja at home can take part in pooja held at other houses and receive the grace of Mother.
