The grand Soorasamharam event, marking the pinnacle of the Skanda Shasti festival, was celebrated with grandeur at the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Thiruchendur, one of the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan. The Skanda Shasti festival commenced on the 2nd of this month with yaga shala pujas, setting the stage for the culminating Soorasamharam, which draws countless devotees.
In preparation for the event, Lord Jayanthinathar was adorned with special abhishekam and decorations at the Shashti Mandapam of the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam. Following the rituals, Lord Jayanthinathar appeared at the seashore and began the symbolic destruction of the demon Tharakasura, who appeared in the form of an elephant. Armed with his divine *vel* (spear), Lord Murugan vanquished Tharakasura, much to the fervent chants of “Arohara” from the devotees.
The battle continued as Murugan confronted Soorapadman, who assumed various fearsome forms to challenge the deity. First appearing in the form of a lion-faced demon, Soorapadman was ultimately overpowered by Murugan’s divine power. The devotees witnessed the climactic scenes as Murugan fought and conquered Soorapadman, who finally transformed into a mango tree and later a peacock. Lord Murugan accepted the peacock as his mount and raised the rooster as his battle emblem, symbolizing victory and divine grace.
The Soorasamharam event drew lakhs of devotees, who gathered to witness the spiritual drama unfolding with deep reverence and fervor. Following the Soorasamharam, tomorrow night at 11 PM, the divine marriage of Lord Murugan and Goddess Deivanai will be celebrated in the grand mandapam located in front of the temple’s towering gopuram.
Similar Soorasamharam celebrations were also conducted at other Murugan temples across Tamil Nadu, attracting lakhs of devotees who gathered to commemorate this significant festival. The event holds immense spiritual significance, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, as Lord Murugan’s victory over the demon Soorapadman is re-enacted with grandeur and devotion.
