Devotees were disappointed as a ban on mountain climbing was imposed in Chaturagiri yesterday.
Chathuragiri Sundaramakalingam Temple is located in the Western Ghats. More than 1 lakh devotees had darshan of Sami there from last 1st till the day before yesterday which was the new moon day. The day before yesterday due to crowding of devotees, the forest gate at the foot of Thanipara was closed at 12 noon and the devotees were denied permission to climb the mountain.
But thousands of devotees continued to climb the mountain through the Varusanadu Upultura Path in Theni District and the Chaptur Banyan Grove Path in Madurai District till 6 pm, so the number of devotees did not decrease on the mountain path and Sundaramakalingam temple.
Due to the crowd, the devotees who came down from the double lingam area on the mountain pass were stopped from coming down from 6 pm onwards. Devotees alleged that medical camp and police were not on duty for the comfort of pilgrims on the mountain pass and they were waiting for hours without food and drinking water at one place.
As a result, on the last day, pilgrims were banned from climbing the mountain. Only the devotees staying at the temple and the mountain pass were allowed to descend to the foothills.
In this case, Gurugeetha, Kumarageetha and Lakshmi, caught in the crowd, got suffocated and suddenly fainted. They were immediately rescued by those who accompanied them and admitted to the Vathirayiru Government Hospital for treatment.
